Scale Operator (Agriculture)

Job Description and Responsibilities

Weigh and carefully inspect the materials brought in by customers, ensuring that each transaction is conducted with efficiency, precision, and a strong emphasis on safety. Provide prompt and fair compensation for the materials while delivering exceptional customer service throughout the process. Additionally, support the Office Administrator by handling various clerical tasks and fulfilling other assigned responsibilities to contribute to the smooth operation of the office.

Scale

  • Operate scale system to weigh peddlers and commercial customers in and out of the yard, ensuring weights, commodities, and pricing are correct
  • Operate scale system to pay peddler and commercial accounts for material bought in a timely, professional manner
  • Communicate via handheld radio with yard operations to minimize yard congestion and ensure smooth traffic flow
  • Communicate yard rules with new customers and provide directions to scrap inspector/appropriate unloading areas
  • Ensure accuracy of scale weights before allowing trucks to proceed
  • Maintain an organized scale house and ensure all paperwork is up to date and is filed properly
  • May have to operate a handheld radiation detector to check loads for radiation
  • Inspect and grade ferrous and nonferrous material
  • Field phone calls and direct phone calls to the appropriate person

Office Clerk

  • Cut Scale Commodity checks, look over for accuracy, and get approval if needed
  • Create Shipments Documentation and review to ensure accuracy
  • Create packing slips and bill out rail cars
  • Enter all shipments into Scrap Management Systems
  • Send shipment information to the proper personnel

Requirements

  • Grade 12 or equivalent
  • No experience necessary, but previous work experience in a manufacturing, production, or similar scrapyard environment is considered an asset
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, and excellent customer service
  • Computer literacy, ability to work independently, confident working under pressure, and excellent organizational skills
  • Ability to multitask and adapt in a high-paced environment
